How is the league structured?
A:
The Detroit MSBL consists of three separate leagues:
21+ League (8 teams in 2011).
35+ League (12 teams in 2011).
45+ League (10 teams in 2011). 55+ League (6 Teams in 2011).

How do I get on a team?
A:
New players are encouraged to attend the spring draft/workout. Alternately, players may join teams through the invitation of a team’s manager OR by contacting a manager on their own.

When is the draft/workout?
A:
The 2012 draft for the 21/35/45/55+ leagues will be conducted on Saturday, April 21.

Q:
I see you said the workout happens rain or shine, but what if it is really raining hard?
A:
The workout/draft will occur RAIN OR SHINE and that includes boatloads of torrential rain.

Where are games played?
A:
Games are played at municipal and high school fields throughout the Metro Detroit area. See the Fields link on the website for a listing of all fields currently used by the league (including maps).

How old do you have to be to play in the league?
A:
Players must be at least 35/45/55 years of age at ANY time during a season’s calendar year. Players must be 21 to play in the 21+ league.

How many games do you play ?
A:
Teams play a 24-game regular season followed by a single-elimination playoff tournament.

When does the season begin?
A:
The season usually begins after Memorial Day weekend.

When does the season end?
A:
The regular season typically winds down around Labor Day. Make-up games are then completed before starting the playoffs. The playoffs usually conclude mid- to late-September depending on the weather.

What days and times are the games ?
A:
Teams can play on any day of the week. Weekday games can start anywhere from 5:45 PM to 8:45 PM, depending on the field. Weekend games can start as early as 11:00 AM.

Do you play 7-inning or 9-inning games?
A:
All games are 7 innings.

Do you play doubleheaders ?
A:
All teams will have at least one scheduled doubleheader. Teams can play more doubleheaders upon request. Teams may play additional doubleheaders near the end of the season when makeup games are scheduled.

What types of bats are used in the league?
A:
21/35+, Aluminum bats may be used, BESR for 2012. Starting in 2013 all bats must be BBCOR. No more than a -3
The 45/55+ league is a Wood Bat only league.

Q:
How many teams/divisions are there in the league?
A:
The number of teams, and he number of divisions within a league, changes from year to year. The league tries to group the divisions so that the teams are as evenly matched from a competitive standpoint as is possible.

Are there restrictions regarding players with pro experience?
A:
For national tournaments, players must be out of pro ball for three years in order to be eligible.

How would you describe the level of competition in the league?
A:
The league tries to set up divisions where teams can be competitive. There are teams stocked with former college and minor-league players. There are other teams comprised of guys with considerably less experience playing organized ball.
