Mother Nature for once cooperated with the MSBL/Bicentennial Field Crew on Thursday night to open the 2019 Brew Crew campaign. The scoring came early and often for the Brewers scoring one in the first on a bases loaded liner by The Skip, Mike Evans to tap the keg on scoring. The Crew would take on runs in the 2nd and 3rd by way of some timely hitting by newcomer, Zak 'Frosty' Ollila (notching his first ribbie and knock in the league) and some great baserunning by the boys in Blue led to some small ball productive outs in the 3rd, extending the lead to 4. That was all that was needed for Dustin to spin a gem...
Dustin went 5+ innings of one hit ball on the night, striking out 8 to open his first year as officially being the oldest dude on the team. Dustin gave way to Zak Dunaway in the 5th who corralled some early control issues to give up one earned over the final two innings of the game. With Dustin's effort he notched his first W of the year and his first Co-Ice Cold Brew of the Game in his career.
Leading the way offensively with a 3 hit effort on the night, soon to be father Brian Parme took advantage of Nationals pitching, earning him the Co-Ice Cold Brew of the Night. Also chipping in offensively was Evans with 3 RBIs to take the early season lead and Dan Smith, turning his first two ABs of disappointment in to a multi-hit night with a double and 2 RBIs.
Earning the stale beer of the night award was Joe Vavro, who volunteered to pick up some adult beverages pre-game only to forget his duties for the game, leading everyone to leave the park parched. Nice work Joe.
The Brewers look to turn the W in to a winning streak on Monday against the highly touted A's in Hazel Park. Thank god baseball is back.
Not too much going on here on this night, so I'll keep it short and sweet. Brews played like a bitter, *poopy* IPA that dudes in flannel like to drink. Larry, Gary, Jerry Basile pitched well enough to keep us in the game but walks and a lack of offense led to the A's victory. Sometimes you just gotta slam it and be done with it.
Brew Crew Staff turns contest in to Bean Ball; drop 2nd straight 6-3
Second straight night of not alot to talk about here but here's the highlights. Evans and Parme with multi-hit nights, Dunaway getting on base all 3 PAs and turning in 3 innings of shutout ball to keep the Brews close. The Crew looks to regain ground Friday night in Hazeltucky vs the Tigers.
The Brew Crew returned to form on pre-game party night at HP on Friday. In the pitchers duel, Gary spun a gem when the boys needed one most. Going a complete game 7 innings, tallying 6 Ks along the way, Basile held the Tigers scoreless over the last 4 innings notching the W, and earning him Co-Ice Cold Brew of the game for his effort.
There wasn't much offense on either side but leading way for the boys was Dan Smith, driving in the tieing and go ahead runs in the bottom of the 6th to give us the lead for good. Dan also had a double to bring his hit total on the night to 2, earing him Co-ICB honors as well. Chipping in on the offense was Colbert 'my name ain't John' Lucey, grabbing his first hit on the year and cashing in the first run of the game in the early innings to keep the Brewers afloat.
With the win the Brewers moved to 2-2 on the rain soaked, short season and look to get above the .500 mark, Thursday against the Creamsicles.
Zak "Frosty" Olilah got the start, his first of his Detroit MSBL career and worked through some high pitch count innings to collect seven Ks over 5+ innings. His work kept it close enough for the Brewers to tie it up in the fourth with a string of hits from the middle of the lineup, including a two RBI single by A.J. Stevenson in his 2019 debut. Reliable returners from last year's roster Dan Smith, Troy Bogenschutz, and Luke Dibussulo also turned in multi-hit games.
The win, however, would go to Dustin Swarthout who came in and got six outs from six batters faced, allowing the Brewers to score the go ahead run on a bases-loaded walk to captain Mike Evans. With the Brewers up 4-3, Dustin struck out the side for the win.
Gary Basile leads the way with the complete game, holding the Nationals to one run on seven hits scattered across seven innings. The Nationals' hits seemed to just make it out of the infield, but Basile countered with command of the off speed pitches to hold the opponent to one run.
The winning run would come in just the second inning for the Brewers as Parme had one of his two singles to lead off the inning, followed by a stolen base and an RBI single by recently unretired Juan "Miller" Martinez. Martinez immediately followed up his RBI single by running into an out at second thinking he was still playing softball, and thinking that the catcher wouldn't notice him walking to take the extra base after the play at the plate. Raymond Cluckey reached on a walk, and rookie Matt Piccinato singled in his first Brewers at bat to drive in what would prove to be the winning run.
Up 4-1 the Brewers were in trouble with Basile loading the bases in the top of the 6th, but he pitched himself out of the jam. The nail was hammered in the coffin when A.J. Stevenson hit a three run blast that put the game out of reach in the bottom of the inning.
Friday evening started out a littler slower than anticipated for the Brew Crew. In front of a capacity crowd Larry was on the hill to start the game and kept the boys in it going 4.1 innings of 1 earned run baseball. He didn't have his best stuff on this night but a yeoman's effort to stabilize the team allowed for the offense to warm themselves up.
With only 7 hits on the night the offense came from getting on base anyway you can, but leading the way with a 2 hit night was backstop Luke DiBussolo, who hit a screamer late in the game to put the Beers up for good, plating two and giving the 4-3 lead to the boys in blue. Newcommer Mathew Piccinato was on base for all 3 of plate appearance to chip in on the night and that was all that the closer, Dustin Swarthout would need to notch another win on the young season. Dustin went the final 2.2 innings of the game giving up no hits and allowing only one (unearned) run and striking 3, and adding another W to the win column for the Brewers.
The Brew Crew moves to 5-3 and look to keep winning against the defending champs on Monday.
Clawson Park was the site for the second straight matchup between the Brewers and DBacks. The Brew Crew opened up the bookended scoring effort with 4 in the first by way of the free pass and a bases loaded 2-run single by Colbert. Colbert would then take to the hill to be dominant throughout most of the game.
Lucey threw a complete game outing, notching 6 strikeouts along hte way and holding the DBacks to just 2 runs in his 2019 debut. He kept runners off the basepaths all night and got a little defensive help from Dustin and Dan patrolling the swamps that were the Clawson outfield, nailing runners at 2nd and 3rd to keep the threats to a minimum along the way. Dan chipped in offensively on the night reaching base all 5 times, with 2 doubles on the night from the leadoff spot. Also chipping in offensively were Evans, Parme, and Colbert (again) getting on 3 times each throughout the night with singles and base on balls to get the offense some ducks on the pond and driving in said ducks with all 3 having 3 RBI nights at the dish.
The Boys in Blue knocked in 2 more runs in the 5 and then erupted for 9 in the 7th to put the game out of reach, batting all 11 around and picking up 5 of the 8 team hits in the inning allowing hte bullpen to rest up for next week and Colbert to finish what he started. Colbert was best in show on both of the ball on this night earning Ice Cold Brew of the game.
The Brewers roll a 2 game winning streak into Monday night's Blue-Out in Clawson versus the 4-2-1 Dodgers.
Thank god for some new threads on Monday at Bicenntenial because it was a hot one on and off the field. The Brewers tallied 12 hits and 8 runs off the Nats with all but one in the lineup reaching safely by way of hit. Leading the way offensively were Tom, Luke, Troy and Joe notching multi-hit nights, and Raymond Cluckey coming up in the 2nd to drive his first run of his young MSBL career. Late call-up Brett "T" came up big in the third to drive in a pair on a hot shot gapper. The offense wasn't done after 5 tonight but added 3 more insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th playing station to station with 4 singles.
That was all that Colbert needed on this night. He spun a complete game (2nd this year), shutout, holding the Nats to just 4 hits and issuing 2 free passes along the way. Lucey struck out 7 this year giving him his 2nd win on the year and steading the bullpen for the second half of the season, not to mention earing Ice-Cold Brew of the game.
We're past the half way mark of the season and the Brewers look to cut the defecit of 2 games against a first place Team USA squad at Capital on Wednesday night. #stricktly
Baking like toasted cheesers, the Brew Crew grinded one out in Flat Rock on Wednesday night. The typical Launchpad that it is the Brewers sloshed their way to a 6-2 deficit after 3 extra base hits and dropped third strike led the Expos to the lead a majority of the game. Colbert found a way to keep the boys in it, going a complete game 7 innings (again) and tallying 9 strikeouts along the way. He didn’t have his best stuff on the night but competed with the best of them allowing 5 ERs while scattering 10 and getting out of jams all night.
The offense was late to the party but showed up in the waning innings. Some timely baserunning and getting on anyway they could, the guys chipped away at the 4 run lead to cut it to 1 in the 6th. Colbert had his best inning of the night striking out the side in a much needed shut down inning and gave the Crew a chance to tie or win in the bottom of the 7th. Manager Mike Evans drove in the tying run on a 55 foot skyball of the dirt in front of the plate, rounding out 3 straight singles to lead off the inning. After a Bo Thomas JR. single, Brian Parme came up with the bases loaded and drove a line shot up the middle to seal the deal on the night. The good guys tallied their 7 runs on 13 hits seeing all but one Brewer get on base by way of a hit. Luke gutting one out at the plate contributed to the victory with 2 hits and Troy, MEvans, Parme, and rookie Raymond Cluckey (in a breakout game) added multi-hit efforts.
The victory brings the Brewers record to 9-7 and they look to continue their winning ways in a bit of a revenge game against the Tigers at Bishop Foley. #stricktlyvictorious
The Brewers offense continues its breakout adding 13 runs to the 7 scored earlier in the week. The Brewers had six doubles to power most of the scoring, led by Luke Dibussolo scoring 4 of the 5 times he appeared at the plate in spite of a broken toe. Brett Tschirhart contributed in a big way as well with 3 RBIs and 2 runs on 2 doubles and a walk in 4 plate appearances.
Dan Smith worked through command issues, 3 errors behind him, and the heat to stay in the game and grab the win. Dan did well to not let outside factors get in the way of a performance in which he allowed 4 earned runs in the complete game victory.
Gary Basile led the way again for the Brewers as they completed the season sweep of the Nationals. Basile had command of the plate with 11 strikeouts and no walks in the complete game effort.
The offense backed Basile up with 9 runs on 10 hits. Everyone in the linupe reached base with a combination of patience and hustle. Dustin Swarthout led the way reaching based in all three plate appearances and scoring twice, which made up for the strength of his arm in the field, as he attempted to throw the ball into another state on multiple occasions. Brian Parme also had his best game since becoming a father with a run, single, double and two RBIs to start the scoring off for the Brewers in the first inning.
Brew Crew bats around to ice game in 6th; win 13-7
I'm going to be frank, the only thing that mattered in this game is the Brewers scored 10 in the 6th. Fast forward to that point down 5-3 in the top of the 6th.
Dustin labored the whole night to get the win. Gutting out 6 innings with the assistance of the time limit to keep the boys in it the whole game. Offensively all but one Brewer (cough cough *Skippper* cough cough) tallied hits on the night, led by multi-hit nights from Luke, Tom, Evan, and Gary (proving he's not just a pitcher). It was a total team victory to keep us in it even with the underused switch defensively after the first batter of the game thanks to AJ not having a non-1B mitt, though he did make up for it with a 1-1 3BB night at the dish.
The win split the season series between the two foes and brought the Brews to 12-8, firmly planting themselves in contention for a playoff spot.
